Our top picks

Creating a sailing destination bucket list is no easy task, especially since one sailor’s perfect breeze might be another’s perfect storm, however, in this article, we’re sharing a handful of the places that are on our (very long) sailing wish list. From the Mediterranean’s iconic coastlines to the wild beauty of northern Europe, these destinations cater to a variety of sailors. Whether you’re drawn to Croatia’s bustling ports, Greece’s quieter islands, or the breath-taking fjords of Norway, this list offers the perfect mix of adventure, natural beauty, and cultural experiences, promising unforgettable experiences both on and off the water.

Sicily & the Aeolians

While nothing may feel like it can quite beat the classic la dolce vita of the Amalfi Coast, Sicily is having its moment to shine in the spotlight, thanks in part to the success of The White Lotus. Yet its appeal goes far beyond a passing fad, with its incredible climate, glamourous coastlines, rich history, and world-famous landmarks like Mount Etna and the Valley of the Temples, as well as the beautiful city of Palermo. Sicily’s timeless allure is hard to resist and time spent navigating around this captivating island should definitely be on your bucket list.

Head north to discover stunning beaches and bays, visit the natural pools of Capo di Milazzo, and dine al fresco overlooking the sea in beautiful Cefalù. Or venture east for a more challenging sail with longer distances, leading to historic towns like Taormina, Catania, and Syracuse (a UNESCO World Heritage site), all with Etna as your backdrop.

For those looking to stretch their sailing legs, a trip to the subtropical, volcanic Aeolian Islands – named after the god of wind – offers an ideal blend of sunshine, glamour, and more demanding sailing conditions. These islands reward you with immense natural beauty and exceptional cuisine, making the journey well worth the effort.

Like most destinations, try to avoid the crowds in August but even when busy, sailing around Sicily and the nearby Aeolian islands offers an intoxicating mix of sun-filled days, elegant ports, fertile landscapes and Mediterranean charm, all set amongst these stunning volcanic lands.

Dodecanese Islands, Greece

Out of the 6,000 islands and islets that belong to Greece, offering endless places to sail, it is always hard to pick a favourite. It all depends on what you’re after – whether its island hopping through the picture-perfect Cyclades, known for Mykonos’ famous party scene and Santorini’s iconic whitewashed vistas, exploring the stunning blue waters and lush greenery of the Ionian Islands, or appreciating the astonishing beauty of Crete, every itinerary is, frankly, a good one. On our bucket list this year are the Dodecanese; located in the sunniest corner of Greece, these islands stretch across the eastern Mediterranean and float gloriously on the Aegean Sea.

A captivating mix of ageless islands, ancient ruins, crystal-clear waters, and beautiful bays, the Dodecanese are steeped in history shaped by medieval crusaders, Byzantine rulers and Ottoman leaders, all intertwined with Greece’s ancient mythological past. The rich history, tranquil beaches and vibrant culture invite all who seek a unique blend of relaxation and adventure. This remote archipelago with its cluster of 12 main islands, including famous Rhodes and Kos, is the ideal destination to island hop and experience the best of Greek living.

Dalmatian Coast, Croatia

From the moment Croatia entered the travel horizon, it was clear it was here for the long haul. If you haven’t yet explored this captivating blend of Balkan, Central European, and Mediterranean cultures, rest assured that when you do, it will be the first of many visits.

Croatia is a natural sailing paradise, with over 1,000 islands to explore, minimal tidal range, balmy climates, and a reliable summer mistral to act as your perfect companion. The pristine waters, rocky coastlines, secluded coves, and high-standard marinas set the stage for any trip, but it’s the Dalmatian coast that truly steals the show. From UNESCO World Heritage Dubrovnik to the lively island of Hvar, historic towns, remote villages, wild forests, and Roman palaces, the variety is endless. Moor up to enjoy fresh oysters straight from the sea, visit vineyards, and explore national parks—all easily accessible from your boat. What makes it the ultimate sailing destination is not just how easy everything is within mooring distance, but perhaps it’s true magic lies in still being able to find untouched wilderness amid these many incredible tourist highlights.

Norwegian Fjords

Moving away from the sun-soaked isles of the Mediterranean, the Norwegian Fjords have become an increasingly popular destination for boats of all sizes, landing at the top of our sailing bucket list for those seeking wild beauty and outdoor adventure.

Breathtaking and jaw-dropping hardly do justice to the sheer majesty of the Fjords, where sky, mountains, and water all merge in a stunning display of reflecting light and natural splendour. Waterfalls cascade down snow-capped peaks, and unspoiled landscapes are here to remind you to appreciate nature’s earthly pleasures. The traditional towns and charming fishing villages are well worth exploring, rich with Viking history, but the true draw is the opportunity to immerse yourself in the great outdoors, breathe in the fresh air, and lose yourself in the stunning vistas of these simply enchanting lands.

In the summer months, it’s warmer than you might think, though you’ll still want to bring the right clothing for those cold nights, and a dip in the Fjords can require a mental brace and resilience that you might not know that you possessed. Unless you’ve sailed to Norway from some far off coast, through gales, it’s unlikely that you here for the challenging sail, but simply being in the great outdoors is enough to feel gloriously alive. Moor up, hike to the incredible viewpoints, fish, or kayak – this is a place to spend time outside and marvel at the awe-inspiring beauty of nature in its wildest form.

Outer Hebrides, Scotland

If you are seeking a challenging sail much closer to home, then Scotland has quietly been creeping up our bucket list. While we are certainly not coming here for the weather, the consistent strong winds give you the opportunity to dance across the sea, exploring its undeveloped coastlines, windswept landscapes, rugged good looks and untouched beaches. It’s a rare chance to sail in blissful solitude through untamed nature.

There are countless ways to embark on a Scottish sailing adventure, from voyaging through non-tidal Clyde to traversing the tranquil inland lochs. However, our sights are set on getting fully off the beaten track and making our way up the west coast into the Outer Hebrides. Here, vast stretches of white sand beaches, magnificent wildlife and a whole swathe of micro-distilleries make the challenge of navigating fierce tides, whirlpools, and gale-force winds, all the more worthwhile.

From sun cream to hot toddies, Scotland’s unpredictable weather means no sailing day will ever be set in granite stone, but that’s part of its magnificent charm. Embrace the challenge on the stormy days because when the sun comes out, we promise there are very few places you would rather be.  Enjoy the incredible silence and marvel at the pods of dolphins, colonies of seals and puffins; encounter whales, white-tipped eagles and spot the iconic stags that roam the shores. Fingal’s cave is a geological wonder not to be missed; the giant’s causeway in miniature form, it is a true cathedral to nature. Add in crumbling castles overlooking natural harbours, untamed forests, and towering peaks to hike, a sail around this breath-taking wilderness offers magic and mystery like no other.

We all love sailing for the endless opportunities for adventure that it offers, whether you’re drawn to sun-soaked Sicilian coastlines or the wild beauty of the Outer Hebrides. Each destination on our bucket list promises something truly special, whether it’s feeling like you’re stepping into the history books, or being blown away by awe inspiring scenery.  The diversity of experiences—both on the water and ashore—reminds us why sailing is such a unique way to explore the world. No matter your level of experience or your personal preferences, these incredible locations provide a perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and unforgettable memories waiting to be made.

So, cast off your lines and start ticking off your sailing bucket list, your next great adventure is just beyond the horizon.
